Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If you have never experienced a physical therapy treatment session before, you are likely to have questions and I am always happy to answer those. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions. If you have further questions do please get in touch via the contact page or by phone. Listening, explaining, informing and reassuring are key components of our working relationship.

Will my treatment hurt?

This is a common concern! In general the answer is no, it won't. It is something of a myth that massage is not effective unless painful. Occasionally we may find tender, restricted or over-sensitive areas that may take work to calm down, but the overall sensation will be positive and pleasant. Pain is a personal matter and only you know what you are experiencing, so you are the guide. If something is too intense for you then you should say so and I will regularly check that you are comfortable.

How long will my treatment session last?

Usually around 60 minutes, sometimes a little longer for the first session when we undertake the initial consultation. I tend to allow some space between appointments, to give us a little flexibility when things overrun or if there are additional things that you wish to discuss.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the problem and the rate of improvement. I will suggest an initial minimum number of sessions, though this places you under no obligation.

What do I wear?

It can be helpful to bring a pair of loose-fitting shorts. You may need to create access to your limbs and great care will be taken to drape areas that do not need to be uncovered: your modesty and dignity is protected at all times. You will be able to change in privacy.

Is this a qualified and insured service?

Absolutely. I offer modalities for which I am trained. I will not undertake anything for which I am not qualified. I constantly update my professional knowledge and skills, keeping track of new research and evidence. I am a member of a number of networks with the UK's leading musculoskeletal therapists. Certification is available on request.
